An Israeli drone carried out a strike on a vehicle north of Saida in southern Lebanon, near the municipal stadium, killing one person and injuring several others, according to our correspondent, who was on the scene.
A few hours after the strike, the Israeli army claimed to have eliminated a senior Hamas military official, Mohammad Shahine. He was "the commander of Hamas's Operations Directorate in Lebanon," wrote Israeli military spokesman Avichay Adraee on X. "Shahine was eliminated after recently encouraging terrorist plans, with advice and funding from Iran from Lebanese territory, targeting Israeli civilians and the Israeli army. He was considered an important and experienced Hamas agent who, during the war, was involved in several terrorist attacks, including rocket fire on the Israeli home front," the statement added.
A "strong sudden explosion" occurred when the vehicle carrying the Hamas official was hit by a guided missile, completely destroying and burning it. The car was targeted just meters away from a Lebanese Army post along the coastal road. Parts of the car were scattered over dozens of meters.
The Lebanese Army and forensic evidence teams are at the scene, beginning to inspect the vehicle.
Citizens, Civil Defense, as well as the Lebanese Red Cross also gathered at the site immediately after the strike
The owner of a coffee shop located near the strike told L'Orient Today: "Suddenly, there was a powerful explosion and heavy smoke. I didn't know what had happened, but after a few moments, it became clear that it was a targeted car, and flames broke out."
This is the second targeted strike on a vehicle in three days, following a similar attack on Saturday night that hit a car near Jarjouh in the Nabatieh district, killing two people. The Israeli army claimed responsibility for the strike, stating it had eliminated one of the leaders of Hezbollah's air unit. The party has yet to announce the death of a commander.
