ANKARA — An Israeli airstrike killed three Turkish citizens who attempted to cross illegally from Lebanon to Israel, Turkey's foreign ministry said on Wednesday.
"It has been established that the three Turkish citizens, with whom contact had been lost while attempting to cross illegally from Lebanon into Israel, were killed in an Israeli air strike in the area," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement, without specifying the exact location of the strike or when it occurred. Reports indicate the attack happened on Jan. 8 and was claimed by Israel two days later. The three Turkish nationals were passing through the disputed hills of Kfar Shuba, occupied by Israel, in the Hasbaya district when they were attacked and killed.
"We condemn in the strongest terms this unlawful attack that resulted in the death of our citizens," the ministry said in a statement. "As we have emphasized on every occasion, Israel must immediately end its aggressive policies that disregard human life and escalate tensions in our region."
Rescue workers and the Lebanese Army have made several attempts to reach the site of the strike to recover the bodies, but have been unable to do so. Ankara said it was working to repatriate their remains to Turkey "as soon as possible."
