Security challenges mount in Gaza since cease-fire began

One of the major challenges facing the Gaza Strip, nearly a week after the cease-fire between Israel and Hamas took effect on Sunday, Jan. 19, is the potential return of internally displaced people. These people constitute 90 percent of the population in the northern part of the Palestinian territory, which has been subject to a large-scale offensive and a reinforced siege since last fall after a year of war. According to the recently agreed truce, Israeli troops are required to partially withdraw from the North and allow the return of displaced residents following Hamas' release of four new hostages expected on Saturday, in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. This movement of the population will be closely monitored by all parties involved, as Tel Aviv had ordered massive evacuations from this region at the beginning...
