Units of the Lebanese Army began operations Saturday to regain control of military checkpoints at the entrances to the Beddawi Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon, according to correspondent Michel Hallak.

The entrances to the camp, located north of Tripoli, were previously controlled by Palestinian factions. A significant deployment of the Lebanese Army is underway at the site.

In a statement released Saturday afternoon, the Lebanese army confirmed it had “regained control of a former PFLP-GC center and two other Fateh-Intifada sites” near Beddawi.

Following the fall of the Assad regime in Syria on Dec. 8, the Lebanese Army had already regained control of several sites belonging to the PFLP-GC (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command) and Fateh-Intifada, factions formerly allied with the regime.

The army reported seizing weapons, ammunition, military equipment, and surveillance devices during the operation.

These Palestinian positions, now reclaimed by the state, are near the porous Lebanese-Syrian border, which has been a hub for smuggling. The Lebanese army has bolstered its presence in the area since the ousting of Bashar al-Assad.
