Hundreds of people left the refugee camp in Jenin in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, on "orders from the Israeli army," the city's governor told AFP, an order immediately denied by the military.

"Hundreds of residents of the camp began to leave after the Israeli army, via loudspeakers mounted on drones and military vehicles, ordered them to evacuate," said Governor Kamal Abou al-Roub, on the third day of a major Israeli military operation.

The Israeli army, when questioned by AFP, denied this. "We are not aware of evacuation orders for the residents of Jenin at this time."

Salim al-Saadi, a member of the camp's management committee and who lives immediately near the camp, asserted that the army was in front of his home.

"They can come in at any moment. Yes, they asked the camp's residents to leave before 5:00 p.m. local time (3:00 p.m. GMT) and there are dozens of people who have started to leave," he said.
