Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Nawaf Salam visited the Baabda presidential palace on Tuesday to brief President Joseph Aoun, who was elected Jan. 9, on progress in forming a government to succeed that of Najib Mikati, who resigned following the legislative elections in May 2022.

The former International Court of Justice judge did not disclose a list of candidates or details during his remarks but assured that the process is "progressing well" and dismissed media reports on the distribution of ministerial portfolios as "speculation."

"I want a government today, before tomorrow, and I confirm that I am committed to forming it in accordance with the constitutional mechanism. You may notice that the method of work is new, but we must learn to fully respect the Constitution," he said. Salam added that the formation of the new government "will not take much time."

Rejecting the idea of an administration with ministries distributed along confessional lines, Salam said he aims to establish a government that embodies "progress and reforms."

"I know the expectations of the Lebanese people are high. I am committed to making every possible effort to establish a government that is worthy of their hopes and deserves their trust," he added.

If formed, Salam’s government will have 15 months, until the next legislative elections, to work toward its objectives.
