Former Lebanese President Michel Aoun. Archive photo Dalati and Nohra.
Since Saturday, persistent rumors about the death of former President of the Republic Michel Aoun were circulating on social media. Denials also quickly spread on the networks. His daughter, Claudine Aoun, president of the National Commission for Lebanese Women, posted a photo of her father at his residence in Metn receiving guests, with a message saying he had a long day of meetings on Saturday and was doing well.
On Sunday morning, the former head of state himself posted a message on his X account to refute the rumors of his death. "Death is inevitable and no one knows when their time will come," he wrote.
He criticized "those who use the death of others in their political wars," considering that they show "frivolity and a total absence of values and morals." By this, he seems to accuse his political opponents of being behind a campaign targeting him.
Aoun was President of the Republic between 2016 and 2022. His successor, Joseph Aoun, was elected on Jan. 9, 2025, after more than two years of presidential vacancy.
