On Thursday, Jan. 16, the historical leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) Massoud Barzani received the head of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi, in Erbil. "A small earthquake," noted researcher Cédric Labrousse on X, while some speak of a historic moment. The meeting is unprecedented between the two rival Kurdish leaders on the regional stage. The first, the former president of Iraqi Kurdistan, is aligned with Turkey, while the second, close to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) classified as terrorist by Ankara, is opposed to him and closer to Iran.
