HAMAS-ISRAEL TALKS

Ben-Gvir threatens his party will resign if Gaza deal approved

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who is also leader of the far-right Israeli Otzma Yehudit party, has announced he and his party will resign from cabinet if the cease-fire and hostage release deal is approved, Israeli media report.

"If the reckless deal goes through, Otzma Yehudit will withdraw from the government," Ben-Gvir said during a press conference on Thursday evening. "If the war against Hamas resumes with full force toward achieving its decisive goals and objectives that remain unmet, we will return to the government," he added.

Ben-Gvir was accompanied by all members of his faction when he gave his statement, except for MP Almog Cohen, who fell out of favor with the party due to his support for the "Tank Profits Law," according to a Channel 12 report.

The minister called on members of the Religious Zionist Party, as well as Likud Knesset members, to act in a similar manner and also resign if the agreement is approved.

Israeli media outlets reported earlier that cabinet was expected to meet on Friday for a session during which they would vote to ratify the cease-fire deal, but there has been no confirmation from the prime minister's office, and there are reports that the meeting could be moved to Saturday.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim bin Jabr Al Thani both announced that the cease-fire is meant to come into force on Sunday, Jan. 19.
