Lebanon’s designated Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has scheduled the non-binding parliamentary consultations for Wednesday, Jan. 15, and Thursday, Jan. 16, in preparation for forming his ministerial team.
“The non-binding parliamentary consultations will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 15, and Thursday, Jan. 16, at Parliament,” read a statement. Salam will start Wednesday with a meeting at 10 a.m. with Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and his deputy Elias Bou Saab. He will then meet with various parliamentary groups before holding individual meetings on Thursday with about 20 independent MPs.
As part of his tour with former heads of government, Salam met on Tuesday with his predecessor Najib Mikati at the Grand Serail. He also visited Fouad Siniora, who considered Salam’s appointment as “a step towards the rehabilitation of constitutional institutions,” while emphasizing that Lebanon can only overcome its challenges through “national unity.”
Meanwhile, Tammam Salam stated that “a new page for Lebanon has begun with the election of the President of the Republic and continues today with the appointment of Nawaf Salam.”
“Tomorrow, I will listen to the MPs concerned about granting confidence to the government, and when I have a complete vision, I will communicate it to the media,” Salam confirmed.
Earlier in the day, the former ambassador of Lebanon to the United Nations and former judge at the International Court of Justice had accepted his designation from the Baabda Palace after discussions with the Head of State and the Parliament Speaker, committing to “immediately get to work” to launch the “project for building the new Lebanon.”
