Baghdad’s balancing act: Mediating between Damascus and Tehran

While Baghdad previously kept its distance from developments in Syria, rumors have been circulating for days about a proposed mediation between Syria’s new government, led by the Islamist group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), and Iran.This initiative reportedly comes from an envoy of the Iraqi government to Damascus and reflects Baghdad’s broader efforts to normalize relations with Syria’s new administration. Though several sources claim that the proposal was rejected by both parties, it underscores the concerns of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani and his government regarding the potential domestic repercussions of regime change in neighboring Syria.
