The Israeli army announced Sunday that it had struck more than 100 "terrorist targets" in the Gaza Strip over the past two days, as its nearly 15-month-long war with the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas continues.
"Air force strikes hit more than 100 terrorist targets across the Gaza Strip and eliminated dozens of Hamas terrorists" on Friday and Saturday, the army said in a statement.
The military also reported targeting several sites used by Palestinian fighters to launch projectiles toward Israel in recent days.
According to Gaza's Hamas-run Health Ministry, whose data is deemed reliable by the UN, at least 59 people were killed between Friday and Saturday.
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant had warned on Wednesday that Israel would intensify strikes on the Palestinian territory if Hamas continued its rocket fire.
Israel has reported being targeted by near-daily rocket fire for over a week, although the frequency of attacks has decreased compared to the early days of the conflict, which began after an unprecedented Hamas attack on Israeli soil on October 7, 2023.
The surge in fighting comes amid the resumption of indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel in Qatar, aimed at reaching a ceasefire agreement and securing the release of hostages held in Gaza.
Despite intense diplomatic efforts led by Qatar, Egypt and the United States, no ceasefire has been reached since a week-long truce in late November 2023.
