The Israeli army targeted several sites of the Syrian army in the central part of the country, causing material damage, the Syrian Defense Ministry said Sunday, while an NGO reported raids aimed at weapon warehouses.
''At approximately 8:05 p.m. today [5:05 p.m. GMT], the Israeli enemy conducted an airstrike from northern Lebanon, targeting several military sites in the central region, resulting in material losses,'' the ministry stated in a press release.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported several Israeli raids targeting a weapons warehouse south of Homs and a missile warehouse in the eastern province of Hama, belonging to the Syrian army. The SOHR also reported several successive explosions due to the presence of weapons.
Earlier Sunday, an airstrike targeted humanitarian aid trucks coming from Iraq to Homs in central Syria, injuring three people, according to the UK-based NGO, which has a vast network of sources in the war-torn country.
Since the outbreak of the civil war in Syria in 2011, Israel has conducted hundreds of raids targeting the Syrian army and pro-Iranian groups, including Hezbollah, which are deployed in support of government forces.
Israeli authorities rarely comment on these strikes but assert they will not allow Iran, Israel's sworn enemy, to expand its presence in Syria.
Strikes have increased in recent days, particularly along the border between Lebanon and Syria, where approximately 310,000 people fleeing Israeli bombs that have been falling on Lebanon since Sept. 23 have crossed into Syria.
On Friday, an Israeli airstrike cut the road between Lebanon and Syria, which had been used in recent days by tens of thousands of displaced people.
Israel, engaged in conflict with Hezbollah, accuses the Lebanese movement of smuggling weapons through the main border crossing between Syria and Lebanon and has struck the border area multiple times in recent days.
