The commander of Israeli Unit 8200, Brigadier General Sariel, announced his resignation on Thursday following the failure of his unit to prevent the Hamas attack on Oct. 7.
The unit is responsible for decoding and analyzing intelligence information. This resignation comes amid significant scrutiny and criticism of the Israeli military intelligence service (Aman), which faced a crisis after the Oct. 7 attack. The head of Aman, General Aaron Haliva, resigned in April 2024, citing responsibility for the failure to prevent the attack.
In his resignation letter, General Sariel apologized for not fulfilling his mission on Oct. 7. Reports from September revealed that Unit 8200 had warned of potential Hamas raids on military positions and kibbutzim, just weeks before the attack.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has resisted calls for an official commission of inquiry into the Oct. 7 events until the ongoing war in Gaza concludes.
The Hamas attack resulted in the deaths of 1,205 people on the Israeli side, mostly civilians, according to AFP. Of the 251 people taken hostage on Oct. 7, 97 are still held in Gaza, with 33 confirmed dead by the Israeli army.
The Israeli military retaliation has killed at least 41,118 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the Hamas health ministry. The UN estimates that the majority of the casualties are women and children.
