Hussein Shukur, the nephew of Hezbollah's former military commander Fouad Shukur, was killed during an armed clash in the Ouzai area, in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Hezbollah spokesperson told L'Orient Today on Monday.
The details surrounding the clash and Shukur's involvement remain unclear. Speaking to L'Orient Today, a Hezbollah spokesperson stated that he was unintentionally caught in the crossfire. They also clarified that Shukur would not be considered a "martyr," as his death was a result of an accident.
When contacted by L'Orient Today, a Lebanese Army source stated they were unaware of any clash in the Ouzai area and could not provide further details.
Fouad Shukur, a prominent figure in Hezbollah, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Beirut's southern suburbs. The strike, according to Israel, was in retaliation for the deaths of 12 children in Majdal Shams, a village in the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights. Israel blamed Hezbollah for the attack, which the party denied.
On Aug. 6, the news outlet Janoubia — known for its critical stance on Hezbollah — reported that several Hezbollah members were arrested following Shukur’s assassination. The outlet suggested the killing was facilitated by Israeli agents who had infiltrated Hezbollah’s ranks. The party is reportedly conducting an internal investigation, having already detained and suspended a senior Hezbollah security official with knowledge of Shukur's whereabouts before the strike. The breach has drawn comparisons to the assassination of Hamas leader Saleh al-Arouri in January 2024.
This is a developing story.
