The Lebanese Education Ministry announced the results of the Lebanese baccalaureate on Sunday. The pass rates by section were also made public: 92.58 percent in general sciences, 74.76 percent in humanities, 93.32 percent in life sciences and 87.54 percent in sociology and economics.
Until Saturday, the publication of the results was not yet certain. A source in the Education Ministry told L'Orient-Le Jour on Saturday that the markers were in the process of "double-checking" the papers and the marks awarded. The official exams took place in special circumstances this year, due to the war raging in southern Lebanon between Hezbollah and Israel, and the closure of many schools since October.
Caretaker Education Minister Abbas Halabi on Sunday congratulated the students who passed the exam, calling on the others to prepare for the make-up exam soon. He thanked the civil servants and markers for their efforts, as well as the army and the Internal Security Forces for making it possible. He had previously urged people not to shoot in the air in celebration of exam results due to the risks posed by stray bullets, which claim lives each year in Lebanon.
