Ashura in Lebanon marked by parallels with the Gaza war
L’Orient Today visited the southern suburbs of Beirut where the procession commemorating the death of Imam al-Hussein was woven with Hezbollah’s war “to liberate Palestine.”

BEIRUT — This year, the thousands from the Shiite community who gathered in the southern suburbs of Beirut to commemorate Ashura marched under the photos of more than 300 Hezbollah members killed in the last nine months of the war with Israel.Falling on the tenth day of the Islamic month of Muharram, Ashura is a solemn event mourning the martyrdom of Imam al-Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, in the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD. His death at the hands of Caliph Yazid’s army is seen as a symbol of the struggle against oppression and injustice.Ashura ceremonies in southern Lebanon were either canceled or kept small this year for security reasons, as Israeli drones, warplanes and artillery continue their attacks.
