The Lebanese Army and security forces were this week heavily deployed across Beirut and its surrounding areas to address rising crime and law violations, multiple sources in the Lebanese capital told L'Orient Today.

A Lebanese Army source informed L'Orient Today that these deployments are routine and no extraordinary measures have been implemented.

However, a security source at another of Lebanon's security agencies said that the security forces launched a "security plan" this week specifically aimed at combating crime and law violations, with a particular focus on motorcycle infractions.

"We understand that the Nafaa (Vehicle Registration Center) was closed for a long time, but there is no excuse for not wearing a helmet. Helmets are crucial for protection amid a surge in motorcycle-related deaths," the source stated.

The Nafaa had been closed for several months due to a corruption scandal that led to the arrest of numerous employees. Although it theoretically reopened in September of last year, it has been operating with a very limited capacity, and there are lengthy delays and backlogs when it comes to processing vehicle and driver registration paperwork.

Social media videos shared online in recent days show residents in Beirut, including in the city's southern suburbs, burning tires and blocking roads in protest against the disruptions caused by what they describe as an unusual increase in security checkpoints.
