Ministry of Youth and Sports evacuated in Beirut after cracks in building's walls

Minister of Youth and Sports George Kallas

BEIRUT — Lebanon's caretaker Minister of Youth and Sports George Kallas asked employees on Wednesday to evacuate the ministry's building in Beirut, after cracks and sounds were heard in some of its walls, according to state-run National News Agency.

Meanwhile, the Public Works Minister Ali Hamiyeh and the President of the Order of Engineers Fadi Hanna sent engineering delegations to the building.

According to NNA, a decision was taken to "prevent any employee or citizen from entering" as long as there is water in the building. Moreover, electricity was isolated from the building.

Contacted by L'Orient Today, Civil Defense head Raymond Khattar said that his teams were asked to remove water from the underground of the building.

L'Orient Today was not informed as to why there was the presence of water in the building's underground.

The civil defense teams later realized that the quantity of water is less than 15 cm; which is the minimum amount that can be removed by the civil defense.

As a result, civil defense teams informed the concerned parties that they will not be able to remove the water from the building.

It is unclear what the next step will be to solve the issue.
