On February 15, 1953, Lebanese women gained the right to vote, 9 years after French women and 62 years before Saudi women.
On this day the Council of Ministers declared there would be no “distinction” between “literate” and illiterate women.
Camille Chamoun had only been President for a few months when the decision was made, marking a historic victory for feminists who had been fighting for years to enable all women to vote and stand for election.
Today, 71 years later, women make up only 6% of the Lebanese Parliament….
