BUENOS AIRES  — Argentina's government said Wednesday that authorities had arrested three foreigners, citizens of Syria and Lebanon, who were suspected of planning a "terrorist act" in the country.

"We have neutralized the arrival of a possible terrorist cell in the country," the security ministry wrote on social media.

The three were arrested on Dec. 30, and one of them was found with Venezuelan and Colombian passports in his name.

The other two suspects were linked to "an international shipment of a 35 kilo parcel originating in the Republic of Yemen" that had been tracked by authorities.

There is a history of both alleged and actual activity by the Iran-backed Lebanese party Hezbollah in South America.

In early November, Brazilian police said they arrested two people for involvement in plotting "terrorist attacks" in the country, which Israel's Mossad spy agency said were backed by Hezbollah against Israeli and Jewish targets.

Brazilian authorities reacted angrily after Israel said it had helped foil plans by "Hezbollah cell" to attack Israeli and Jewish targets in Brazil. Justice Minister Flavio Dino condemned a "rush to conclusions" for "propaganda" purposes.

But, police also executed 11 search and seizure raids in Sao Paulo, Brasilia and the southeastern state of Minas Gerais, they said in a statement.
