EU chief backs sanctions against West Bank extremist settlers

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has voiced her support for sanctions against "extremist" settlers in the West Bank. Speaking at the European Parliament on Wednesday, she condemned the rising violence which she believes poses a threat to regional stability.

"The escalation of violence by extremist settlers is causing immense suffering to Palestinians. It jeopardizes the chances of lasting peace and could further worsen regional instability. That's why I am in favor of sanctioning those involved in the attacks in the West Bank," von der Leyen said in Strasbourg, delivering her remarks in French.
