BEIRUT — Mohammad Mousa Kassem, a resident of the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp, died Monday when he was electrocuted while attempting to repair electricity wires in the camp, a colleague of the deceased at the nearby Ghaziyeh municipality told L'Orient Today.

According to the source, the electricity wires Kassem, 65, was working on had been damaged during recent armed clashes in the camp.

Last week, dayslong fighting between rival Palestinian groups in Ain al-Hilweh left 13 people dead and injured many more.

Confirming Kassem's death, a source within the refugee camp told L'Orient Today that the intensity of the fighting had left the area in which Kassem was working heavily damaged.

Around 350 families fled the fighting to Saida, on the outskirts of which the camp is located.

Ain al-Hilweh is home to some 80,000 Palestinian refugees. The densely populated camp is regularly the scene of clashes due to personal disputes and tensions between various Palestinian factions. Last week's clashes were the deadliest in several years.
