BEIRUT — A man was shot Saturday morning in Tripoli, North Lebanon, after motorcyclists opened fire in his direction, L'Orient Today's correspondent in the region reported.
Unidentified assailants fled the scene after arriving on a motorcycle and discharging bursts of gunfire from assault weapons, injuring A. K., who was sitting in a 4x4 vehicle at the time.
In a critical condition, the wounded man was rushed to a local hospital. Security forces deployed to the scene have launched an investigation.
Last September, caretaker Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi announced a "sustainable" security plan for North Lebanon, following a spate of deadly shootings in Tripoli that had raised fears of an upsurge in violence.
Many security incidents continue to be reported in the city, however, which is among the poorest on the Mediterranean coast.
A man was shot dead in Tripoli following a family dispute at the end of May.
