BEIRUT — An Internal Security Forces officer suspected of killing his ex-wife Thursday in Bsaba, a town in the Chouf region of Mount Lebanon, has been arrested, according to a police statement.

The man, who is in his 50s, is accused of stabbing his 49-year-old ex-wife before repeatedly running her over with his car as she tried to flee, a police statement issued Friday explained.

Following the murder, the ISF closed off access to the village and, within 24 hours, succeeded in arresting the man.

On Thursday, the mokhtar of Bsaba told L'Orient Today that the couple — who had recently divorced — had children.

In recent months, women's rights associations have denounced an "unprecedented" level of violence against women in the country.

In March, a 27-year-old Lebanese man from Baalbeck, in the Bekaa Valley, was accused of killing his 26-year-old wife by shooting her three times.

In February, a retired ISF officer killed his ex-wife with a shotgun in Tripoli, northern Lebanon.

In August 2022, Hanaa Khodr, a 21-year-old mother of two, who was five months pregnant at the time, was beaten and burned alive by her husband.

The same month, another Akkar woman, Ghinwa Alawi, mother of three, attempted to end her life after years of alleged domestic violence.

Activist Alia Awada told L'Orient Today that the growing number of femicides and cases of domestic violence in Lebanon is a direct consequence of the country's deteriorating economic and social situation.
