BEIRUT — Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit met with caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati and parliament speaker Nabih Berri in Beirut on Monday, the state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported.

During his meeting with Mikati, Aboul Gheit said that the implications of the Saudi-Iranian deal announced last Friday, are "not yet clear" for the region.

"The Saudi-Chinese-Iranian summit is very positive and its initial effects are to establish a kind of political and security stability between Saudi Arabia and Iran, but its implications for all the issues in the region are not yet clear," the Arab League leader said.

This marks the second time in over 40 years that Iran and Saudi Arabia have restored diplomatic relations after breaking them off during periods of acute crisis.

Aboul Gheit added that "the Arab summit conference will be held next May in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and it is likely that the main topic of the summit will be the economy and how to help the needy Arab regions."

Lebanon is in its third year of economic crisis. The past three years have disrupted the daily life of all Lebanese and left many in extreme hardship.

Meanwhile, the country’s political class has carried out “adjustment without reforms,” to the disadvantage of depositors, companies and residents.

During his meeting with Aboul Gheit, Mikati stressed "the importance of the summit adopting economic ideas and initiatives that contribute to achieving development goals in the Arab countries,” NNA reported.

According to NNA, Aboul Gheit also met with Berri to “discuss the general situation in Lebanon and the region and the latest political developments were presented.”
