Iranian authorities on Monday banned reformist daily Sazandegi for publishing what they deemed "false content", reported the state media.

The ban was instated after Sazandegi criticized the country's economic policies and morality police.

The ban came after a wave of protests — triggered by the death of 22-year-old Iranian-Kurd Mahsa Amini — broke out in mid-September, leading to hundreds of deaths and thousands of arrests.

Amini died in custody following her arrest by the Islamic Republic's morality police for allegedly breaching the country's Hijab law.

"In its meeting today, the Press Supervisory Board banned Sazandegi newspaper," state news agency IRNA reported, saying investigations had found that the publication had committed "violations" including publishing "false content" and "disturbing public opinion."

First published in February 2018, the paper was founded by the reformist Executives of Construction Party and was reported to have a daily circulation of about 8,000 copies.

The newspaper published articles criticizing the government's economic policies, as well as the country's morality police.

Under a partial amnesty granted by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the Islamic republic has recently released dozens of prisoners, including many arrested during the protests,

But many politicians, activists and journalists remain detained and some face long sentences.
