BEIRUT — Caretaker Health Minister Firass Abiad on Friday launched a campaign to provide people in Lebanon with doses of the Pfizer bivalent COVID-19 vaccine.

In a press conference on Friday in Beirut, Abiad said that "the pandemic is still under control, but it is a duty to take care of the most vulnerable like elderly people and those with chronic illnesses and lung problems because they might need intensive care in case of infection."

Abiad also thanked the French embassy for donating 300,000 bivalent vaccines "which provide protection from the original illness and its variants." Abiad also said that the vaccine will be distributed for free in a number of medical centers.

On Jan. 5, Abiad said Lebanon was experiencing a new wave of COVID-19, but assured that the situation was still "under control," encouraging people to continue receiving new doses of the vaccine.

Since the first recorded case of COVID-19 in Lebanon in Feb. 2020, the country has seen 1,226,155 recorded cases of the virus. At least 10,769 patients have died, according to the latest toll published Wednesday night by the ministry.

Lebanon is also still struggling with its first cholera outbreak since 1993, though cases are on the decline and Abiad has said the situation is also still under control.
