BEIRUT — Caretaker Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi announced on Friday that New Year's Eve will see 7,700 security officers deployed across Lebanon as part of his ministry's security plan for the holidays.

In a press conference, Mawlawi added that 433 patrols will also be deployed for New Year's Eve. Security forces will create checkpoints to control speed limits after 12 a.m., he said. The New Year's Eve measures will remain in place until the afternoon of Jan. 1.

Mawlawi urged people not to participate in celebratory gunfire and said that security forces will try to catch anyone who does so.

Lebanese authorities announced earlier in December that they would enact a national security plan for the Christmas and New Year's Eve holidays, as the country continues to struggle with an unprecedented economic crisis.

Celebratory gunfire is commonplace in Lebanon on New Year's Eve, sometimes resulting in injuries, death and damage. Last year, a Middle East Airlines aircraft was hit by the gunfire.
