Several injured in gas tank explosion in Beit Misk

BEIRUT — Several people were injured Friday morning in a gas cylinder explosion in a residential complex in the Metn region town of Beit Misk north of Beirut, Red Cross head Georges Kettaneh told L'Orient Today.

"Two of the injured were hospitalized, but their injuries are not serious," Kettaneh said, adding that the building where the explosion occurred suffered "a lot of damage."

The Civil Defense, which responded to the scene where a fire broke out after the explosion, said that eight people were injured. A woman and her son who were rescued from under the rubble and are being hospitalized. Six foreign workers who were near the scene were treated on site.

The Civil Defense added in a statement that the explosion occurred in the basement of a five-story building. The upper floors were damaged. The fire has been brought under control and cooling operations are continuing.

When contacted by L'Orient-Le Jour, a manager at the complex said he did not know the exact cause of the explosion.
