BEIRUT — The head of Hezbollah's parliamentary bloc, Mohammad Raad, said Tuesday that the next president of Lebanon should "not stab the Resistance in the back," an assertion similar to one made Friday by Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah.

Speaking during a ceremony in the southern village of Adshit, Raad said the next president should be "proud of  the work of their people and their struggle in protecting the country."

He added that the new president "should ... not disappoint the hopes of the people who live in security and liberty because of the efficiency of the Resistance," referring to Hezbollah.

Addressing the attendees of the ceremony, Raad said: "The battle is about your destiny. It's about the choice of staying in this country or immigrating, between your enemy controlling your country or you living safely in it."

Michel Aoun's presidential term ended Oct. 31. So far, Parliament has held sessions to elect his successor, all of which have failed.

Hezbollah voted blank in each of these sessions, as have its allies: the Amal Movement, the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) and the Marada Movement.

The leaders of the FPM and Marada — Gebran Bassil and Sleiman Frangieh, respectively — are both allies of Hezbollah but rivals of one another. Both are also considered potential presidential candidates.

Hezbollah has yet to show official support for either party leader.
