BEIRUT — Armed clashes broke out on Tuesday morning in the village of Dar al-Wasiaa, west of Baalbeck, in the Bekaa between the Lebanese Army and suspects who allegedly kidnapped two Syrian children more than three weeks ago, our correspondent in the region reports.

According to our correspondent, military helicopters intervened, but the army was unable to find the wanted children, identified by their initials as G. A. and M. A. The soldiers did, however, destroy marijuana plantations in the village, our correspondent added.

The army said in a statement that it was conducting raids in Dar al-Wasiaa in search of convicts and drug dealers, without further details.

Security incidents are frequent in the Bekaa, a region where weapons are widely circulated and where there are sometimes fights between the military and suspected criminals or members of heavily armed clans.
