BEIRUT — More than 5 million Captagon pills were seized by the Internal Security Forces (ISF) in Ghazieh, South Lebanon, caretaker Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi announced Tuesday on Twitter.

Captagon pills, a drug of the amphetamine family, were seized during a search conducted by the ISF intelligence services "in a warehouse in Ghazieh before being transferred to the port of Beirut," with their first destination Abidjan, Ivory Coast, and then Sudan, Mawlawi added, although it is unclear if Sudan was their final destination. Approximately 5.415 million pills were hidden in construction boards and an investigation has been opened to determine the circumstances of this trafficking.

A security source in Ghazieh interviewed by L’Orient Today’s correspondent said the search took place on Monday evening. Two suspects who were in the warehouse were also arrested, according to that source.

Just last week, Lebanese customs announced that they had seized some 160,000 Captagon pills at the Beirut International Airport, destined for the Sultanate of Oman via the Qatari capital Doha. Lebanese customs arrested one man, with the cooperation of the airport's security services.

Lebanese authorities have stepped up efforts to combat drug trafficking from or through Lebanon, amid security restrictions on Lebanese exports by Gulf countries.
