BEIRUT — Lebanon on Monday recorded four cholera cases in Arsal, a town in northeastern Lebanon, bringing the total to 18 cases, a Health Ministry spokesperson told L'Orient Today.

According to the spokesperson, the other 14 cases are all in the Akkar governorate in the country's north.

Lebanon on Thursday recorded its first cholera case since 1993, amid a serious outbreak in neighboring Syria, which has seen more than 13,000 reported cases and 60 deaths, according to the most recent World Health Organization count.

The person reported on Thursday to have been infected was in Akkar and remained in stable condition, caretaker Health Minister Firass Abiad said in a press conference last week.

As the Lebanese healthcare system has been hit hard by a three-year financial crisis and the Aug. 4 2020 port blast that destroyed critical medical infrastructure in the capital, the sector would struggle to cope with a large-scale outbreak, Abiad added in last week's press conference.
