BEIRUT — The Constitutional Council on Wednesday denied claims of political interference in the appeals still under consideration against the 2022 parliamentary election results. Earlier Wednesday, the head of the Lebanese Forces Samir Geagea claimed that Hezbollah and the Free Patriotic Movement are pressuring the council to make decisions regarding these appeals in their favor.

Here’s what we know:

    • In a press release, the Constitutional Council said, “in response to the controversy caused by the declarations of certain irresponsible journalists in the media and according to which certain decisions would be made in favor of certain parties concerning appeals against the results of the parliamentary elections,” the Council “is not concerned by these statements.” The council also said that it “is continuing to study these appeals and prepare reports within a period not exceeding the deadline of Sept. 30.”

    • Earlier today, Geagea said via Twitter that the Constitutional Council is under political pressure. “Great pressure is exerted by Hezbollah and the Free Patriotic Movement against the CC [Constitutional Council] to modify the review of appeals so that four opposition parliamentary seats would be given to the majority [in Parliament] in various regions, especially in Tripoli and Marjayoun. The objective of these pressures is to reverse the balance of power within Parliament, ahead of the presidential election,” Geagea said. President Michel Aoun’s term ends on Oct. 31 and another president has to be elected by members of Parliament.

    • In total, 15 appeals were filed against the results of the May 15 parliamentary elections and submitted to the Constitutional Council before the deadline for this procedure on June 16. If some of the appeals are upheld by the Constitutional Council, it would change some of the seats in Parliament.
