UK ambassador urges government to 'implement' reforms

BEIRUT — The United Kingdom Ambassador to Lebanon Hamish Cowell on Tuesday called on the Lebanese authorities to “implement urgent reforms” in order to reach an agreement with the International Monetary Fund, during a meeting with Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati.

Here’s what we know:

    • The British embassy released a statement saying that the UK is committed to continuing its “support to the Lebanese Armed Forces and to the most vulnerable living in Lebanon.”

    • “The UK wants to see stability, prosperity and security in Lebanon. This is why I urge authorities to deliver urgent reforms in order to secure a much-needed IMF deal,” Cowell said.

    • Lebanon has already signed a preliminary agreement with the IMF which provides aid of three billion dollars over four years on the condition that the authorities apply a series of reforms.
