BEIRUT — A three-storey building completely collapsed on Sunday in the Qibbeh district of Tripoli, in North Lebanon, killing one person and injuring several others, according to preliminary information from our correspondents in the region.

Here's what we know:

    •  According to our correspondents, shortly before 7 p.m., an injured elderly woman was evacuated on a stretcher, and about an hour later, a little girl was pulled out of the rubble. She was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Her death angered locals, with some firing shots in the air.

    • The Civil Defense, the Red Cross and the Internal Security Forces were dispatched to the scene. They were helped by local residents who also rushed to the scene. Efforts are underway to rescue and evacuate the injured and ensure no one else is trapped under the rubble. The army for its part established a security cordon in the perimeter because of a risk of collapse of other neighboring buildings. Bulldozers are working to remove the rubble.

    • Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati, himself from Tripoli, asked the health minister to order the hospitals in the region to receive the wounded, and asked the Higher Relief Committee to compensate the inhabitants who were affected by this tragedy.

    • On Saturday, heavy torrential rains fell on certain regions of Lebanon, particularly in the north, causing damage. It is not possible at this time to ascertain if the collapse of the building in Qibbeh is connected to the recent weather conditions.
