BEIRUT — Polling stations for Lebanese residing in Iran and nine Arab countries, namely Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Syria, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt, opened on Friday morning, kicking off the first round of voting in Lebanon's legislative elections.

Here's what we know:

    • A total of 30,929 Lebanese emigrants, previously registered in these countries, are eligible to vote in these elections.

    • On Thursday, the authorities had called on Lebanese abroad to participate massively in the legislative elections, assuring that all obstacles to the ballot, in particular financial, had been dealt with.

    • These elections are the first since the mass protest movement of 2019, during which the Lebanese took to the streets by the thousands to demand the departure of an incompetent and corrupt political class.
