BEIRUT — Saudi Ambassador to Lebanon Walid Bukhari said on Tuesday that his country “totally rejects the practices of obscurantist forces that hinder political life and stability in Lebanon.”
Here’s what we know:
• Bukhari’s comments, reported by local media outlet el-Nashra, came during an event dedicated to the Koran at the Saudi Embassy in Yarze.
• Abdellatif Derian, Grand Mufti of the Republic, also spoke at the ceremony, saying “We will not allow anyone to attempt to undermine Saudi Arabia.”
• Bukhari returned to Beirut last month after an absence of five months, a gesture of Saudi anger over critical remarks made by former Information Minister George Kurdahi. Since returning to Lebanon Bukhari has held numerous meetings with local politicians and religious notables, reigniting Saudi diplomatic engagement in the country.
