Russia formally states ‘desire to monitor’ Lebanon’s parliamentary elections

BEIRUT —Russia's ambassador to Lebanon Alexander Rudakov presented a letter Monday to Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi expressing his “country’s desire to monitor” the upcoming parliamentary elections scheduled for May 15, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Here’s what we know:

    • According to the NNA, Mawlawi also Monday received Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League Abd al-Rahman al-Solh, who “communicated the Arab League’s willingness to participate in monitoring the upcoming polls.”

    • Earlier today, after a six-day visit to Lebanon, the chief observer of the European Union’s electoral observation mission for the May polls, Gyorgy Holvenyi, said that during his trip he encountered no indication that the elections will be postponed. He also said officials had assured him that there will be sufficient funding to properly run and monitor the polls.
