Turkish foodstuffs donation arrives for security forces

BEIRUT — The Turkish ship Dada Star arrived at the Tripoli port on Monday loaded with 500 tons of foodstuffs. This is the first batch of donations from Turkey, with a second shipment expected to arrive next week, the state-run National News Agency reported.

Here’s what we know:

    • The shipment was received by the Turkish Ambassador to Lebanon Barış Ulusoy and a number of Lebanese government officials, including the Secretary-General of the High Relief Commission Maj. Gen. Muhammad Khair.

    • Turkey’s ambassador to Lebanon declared that the first shipment contained “524 tons of humanitarian aid items, which were prepared in coordination of the Presidency of Disaster and Emergency Management (AFAD) of our Ministry of Interior, with the instructions of our distinguished President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has arrived in Lebanon.”

    • It will be distributed to the security services operating within the Interior Ministry, including the Internal Security Forces, Public Security, State Security and the Civil Defense.

    • Speaking on the foodstuffs’ arrival, Khair said this first batch of donations coming from Turkey to Lebanon indicates “the depth of the brotherly relations between the two countries, which have ties of love, brotherhood and cooperation deep in history.”

    • Last month, Prime Minister Najib Mikati traveled to Turkey to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Mikati and Erdogan “agreed on a series of joint measures to enact bilateral cooperation” between the countries.

    • Khair explained in his statement that Lebanon is in need of all charitable initiatives “to confront the crises it is suffering from … especially in light of the snow storm and road closures.” Lebanon has been suffering the fallout of a financial collapse and economic crisis since 2019, which has caused its national currency to lose more than 90 percent of its value against the US dollar on the parallel market and, according to UN figures, pushed more than three-quarters of its population into poverty.

    • Explaining that Monday’s shipment to the Tripoli port is a “new tangible model of Turkey’s solidarity” with Lebanon, the Turkish ambassador said,“Turkey will not leave its Lebanese brothers alone in their difficult times, not only with state institutions but also with non-governmental organizations.”
