BEIRUT – Kuwait’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Ahmad Nasser Al-Mohammad Al-Sabah expressed “satisfaction” towards “[the Lebanese government’s] initiatives to restore ties between Beirut and the Gulf” during a phone call with Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Saturday.

    • In January, Kuwait led a diplomatic mission in Beirut on behalf of Gulf monarchies with the support of Western powers. The Kuwaiti foreign minister delivered a set of trust-building proposals during the official visit, which included Hezbollah’s disarmament, a condition that Lebanon’s Foreign Minister said would be impossible to meet.

    • Arab League secretary general Ahmad Aboul Gheit last Monday expressed his hopes for the “activation” of the Kuwaiti initiative and informed president Michel Aoun of “reactions” that are of concern to him along with “the results of contacts he’d made” in this context.
