STL overturns acquittal of two alleged Hezbollah members

BEIRUT — The United Nations Special Tribunal for Lebanon on Thursday found two alleged members of Hezbollah guilty on appeal of the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

"The chamber unanimously decided to overturn the acquittals of Mr. [Hassan Habib] Merhi and Mr. [Hussein] Oneissi. We unanimously declare Mr. Merhi and Mr. Oneissi guilty," said Ivana Hrdlickova, the STL's presiding judge.

The tribunal had already convicted another alleged Hezbollah member, Salim Ayyash, in absentia in 2020 for his part in the truck bomb, which killed Hariri and 21 others in central Beirut.
