BEIRUT — Land transport unions head Bassam Tlais Wednesday announced that he asked his union to cancel tomorrow’s strike, which was planned as part of a three-day action that started today.
Here’s what we know:
• Speaking at a press conference Wednesday evening, Tlais said, “We were informed that our demands were discussed in the cabinet’s schedule,” in reference to a cabinet meeting that took place earlier Wednesday. He went on to say that he “will give [the government] a one day chance,” and asked his union to cancel tomorrow’s protest.
• Tlais also said that his union will hold a meeting tomorrow at 11 a.m. to discuss the outcome of a cabinet session scheduled at 9 a.m.
• On Wednesday, land transport workers, including bus and truck drivers, went on a strike that was planned to continue until Friday to protest government inaction on promised aid to the sector amid deteriorating living conditions for the workers.
