BEIRUT — Lebanese Forces head Samir Geagea announced Monday the candidacy of former Information Minister Melhem Riachi in the Metn District in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Geagea also announced his party’s support for “independent candidate” Razi al-Hajj, who is running in the same constituency.

Here’s what we know:

    • At a press conference, the LF leader announced Riachi’s candidacy for the Greek-Catholic seat in Mount Lebanon’s second electoral district, Metn.

    • Hajj, meanwhile, is running for one of the Maronite seats in the same district.

    • In the last elections in 2018, Hajj unsuccessfully contested this seat.

    • In 2018, the LF only secured one seat in this constituency, that of Eddy Abillama.

    • There are eight seats to fill in Mount Lebanon’s second electoral district: four Maronite, two Greek-Orthodox, one Greek-Catholic and one Armenian-Orthodox.

    • On Sunday, Geagea announced the candidacy of Chawki Daccache in Kesrouan. In early January, Geagea kicked off the electoral battle in the district of Batroun with the announcement of the candidacy of Ghaith Yazbeck, editor-in-chief of the local channel MTV, for one of the two Maronite seats.

    • In the press conferences, the head of the LF also accused Hezbollah and the Free Patriotic Movement of preparing “a new plan to postpone or torpedo the next legislative elections” by reopening the subject of the expatriate vote, which the FPM opposes in its current form. Under the prevailing electoral law, expatriates will cast ballots in Lebanon’s 15 existing constituencies rather than in a specialized six-seat, 16th constituency.
