BEIRUT — Former minister Elias Murr on Saturday announced his son’s candidacy for Parliament to represent the Metn area, following in the footsteps of Elias Murr’s father, Michel, who served in parliament from 1968 to 1972 and then from 1991 until his death in 2021.

Here’s what we know:

    • Following a meeting Saturday with the Tashnag Party, Elias Murr announced the candidacy of his son Michel in the upcoming 2022 Parliamentary elections scheduled for May 15.

    • Elias Murr — who served as interior minister from 2000 to 2005 and then as defense minister until 2011 under six different cabinets — said that his son “aspires for change and wants to live in Lebanon.”

    • Murr’s father, Michel, an MP representing the Metn, died on Jan. 31, 2021 at the age of 88, the oldest member of Lebanon’s parliament. Michel Murr was seen as an example of Lebanon’s clientelist political system under Syrian hegemony from 1990 to 2005. His political power in the Metn area declined after Syria’s withdrawal in 2005 and the rising political fortunes of the Free Patriotic Movement, which he was initially aligned with at the time.
