BEIRUT — Hamas on Saturday denied the overnight explosion in the Burj al-Shemali Palestinian refugee camp in the southern Lebanese city of Sour was at one of its weapons depots.
Here is what we know:
• In a statement, the Palestinian group said that the reports that a Hamas weapons cache exploded Friday night were false.
• Hamas said that faulty electrical wiring in a warehouse “containing gas and oxygen canisters as well as detergents and COVID-19 disinfectants” had caused the blast, adding that it denounced the “disinformation campaign” launched by the media.
• Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported Friday night that an ammunition depot had exploded in Burj al-Shemali, leading to casualties. The number of casualties has remained shrouded in mystery, with a local Civil Defense force representative telling L’Orient Today that one person was killed and ten to twelve injured by the blast, according to information from Hamas.
