BEIRUT – Hezbollah official Nabik Kaouk said in a speech that there is a “real opportunity” to break the political deadlock preventing Najib Mikati’s cabinet from meeting, a day after Lebanon’s premier said he would “soon” call for a government session, the NNA reported Saturday.

Here's what we know:

    • During a Hezbollah ceremony in the southern town of Sarafand, Kaouk said that Mikati is “making continuous efforts to find appropriate” solutions to the impasse, in which Hezbollah and Amal insist the government take action regarding Judge Tarek Bitar’s probe into the 2020 Beirut port explosion.

    • Kaouk added that there is a “real opportunity” for a solution based on “overcoming the causes of disruption,” an implicit reference to Bitar’s investigation, which the Hezbollah official’s organization has repeatedly criticized.

    • He also said that “those concerned should not miss this opportunity,” without elaborating further.

    • On Friday, Mikati said that he informed President Michel Aoun that he would “soon” call for a cabinet session to tackle more than 100 outstanding items. The government last met on Oct. 12, when a row erupted with ministers affiliated with Hezbollah and Amal over the Bitar investigation.
