BEIRUT — The International Movement of Lebanese Enterprises (MIDEL) announced in a statement its decision to soon send an economic delegation to Syria consisting of Lebanese business [people] residing in Lebanon and abroad "during the next quarter."

"This delegation will meet with officials, economic institutions, and Syrian entrepreneurs in order to strengthen economic partnerships between the two countries, explore joint investment opportunities, and contribute to reconstruction projects in Syria, in the interest of both the Lebanese and Syrian economies and to open new prospects for the private sector in both countries," said the organization, headed by Fouad Zmokhol.

This announcement comes a day after the visit of Syrian Foreign Minister Assaad al-Chaibani. During this visit, the senior Syrian official and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam signed an agreement establishing a "joint Lebanese-Syrian Higher Commission," a body that will serve as the institutional framework for consultation, coordination and cooperation between the two countries. Meeting on Thursday, the Lebanese government approved the agreement immediately afterwards.

In a statement issued after the board meeting, MIDEL also renewed its support for President Joseph Aoun and prime minister Nawaf Salam, "in the efforts they are making to consolidate domestic stability and succeed in diplomatic efforts and direct negotiations aimed at achieving lasting peace," in reference to the June 26 signing of the framework agreement with Israel.

MIDEL also repeated its call to implement economic policies that prioritize productivity without increasing the tax burden on businesses.
