Fashion: New standard-bearer for the Palestinian cause

From model Bella Hadid to Queen Rania of Jordan and Rama Duwaji — the wife of Zohran Mamdani, New York’s new mayor — more and more public figures are being spotted wearing designs by Palestinian fashion designers. Two of these designers recount how they are trying to combine creativity with political engagement.

Right in the heart of Ramallah lies a fashion boutique with a sense of humour. As soon as you walk in, a warning sign sets the tone. Proud of his achievement, Jawdat Shweiki, a man in his early thirties who heads up the Palestinian brand Fovero, explains the inscription:“When you’re travelling around the occupied West Bank, you see loads of warnings like: ‘Warning: this is Palestinian territory. It is dangerous for Israelis to enter.’ So we decided to subvert these messages in a light-hearted way and wrote: ‘Warning: these items are produced in Palestine to high quality standards’.”Diverted messages in front of Jawdat Shweiki's shop in Ramallah.
